Benefit for AFEMS stemming from the Common Position on "Ammunition Classification under REACH" adopted in the EU defence sector
On 22 September 2017, Member States of the European Defence Agency (EDA) adopted a Common Position on Ammunition Classification under REACH aiming at building a common understanding of the REACH regulatory provisions and facilitating the exchange of best practices in the field of Ammunition Classification.
The Common Position is based on the outcome of the Agency's work conducted in this field since 2014, with the support of Member States' REACH and ammunition experts at technical level, and on the basis of a continuous exchange with the European Commission, the European Chemicals Agency and EU defence industry including some of AFEMS Industries operating also in the defence sector.
The Common Position constitutes an important milestone in increasing awareness on issues pertaining to ammunition classification under REACH. It will significantly contribute to reduce the risk of misinterpretation of, and enhance compliance to, the REACH Regulation´s provisions on substances/mixtures or articles. It will also minimize the possibility of potential incorrect classification of ammunition along the REACH Regulation´s provisions on substances/mixtures or articles.
Positive effects are expected also for civil ammunitions that will similarly fall under the scope of the Common Position. To read the full text adopted, please click here.

The Joint Paper, officially presented by to all Member States on the occasion of the Council Industry meeting on 23rd October, has the ambition to influence the content of both the future Council Conclusions and EU Presidency Report on the EU Industrial Strategy that will be adopted by Ministers of Economy and Industry during the Council meeting on 30th November. The paper will also be officially handed over to EC President Juncker, EC Vice-President Katainen, Commissioner Bie?kowska responsible for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs , important MEPs, Committee of the Regions' representatives and many other policy makers.
